Felix Gonzalez-Torres has been a huge inspiration to me ever since I saw his work at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. His work centers around family, love, and the absence that those people will soon leave. I feel a connection to his work because my current concept deals with my parents' divorce and the absence of my father. I could spend hours looking at the beauty of the glowing bulbs or the iridescent candy wrappers.

Our class finally finished our one and only project for Mel Chin. We decided that College Street in Fayetteville needed something more, so the idea of street signs came about. Sadly they were taken down a few hours after they were installed, but thankfully we were able to document them before that happened.

Our Arkansas Fundred Initiative site will be up and running soon. Mel is so incredible - he wrote a check for the rest of the money that we needed ($2,000+). We're doing something incredibly awesome every time we meet, and soon we'll have something to show for it.

Southern Graphics Council Conference, Chicago

About a week ago Suzanne and I went to the annual Southern Graphics Council conference. It was in Chicago this year, and I was more than excited and thankful that I was able to go (I basically had a two week break because of spring break). It was my first time to attend, and it was pretty awesome to say the least. We saw so many great prints, and so many different and amazing techniques. It makes me really sad that our university's print program lacks excitement, and of course funds (the business school receives the most funding). I didn't know what to think about Chicago at first, I just had to take it all in. I had never been in a place like that before, and it was hard for me to understand/remember where we were because you can't see for miles like you can here (ha). Mostly it just felt so surreal that I was dumbfounded the whole time, so I couldn't think of what I wanted to do (even though I had made a list). Now that I'm back in Fayetteville, I really do miss Chicago. It will take a huge adjustment if I ever decide to live there.

Two guys who run a t-shirt printing business, called Drive By Press, talked on a panel at the conference. They make hand cut wood block printed shirts. They travel to different schools and places with a press in the back of their van, and roll it out and print 'em up. They were at an art reception one night, so I got a shirt!

The background on this linoleum cut was a random project that I was doing on my own to use for card making and other things. Even though the background wasn't in the original plan I feel like it makes some sense because it adds chaos to the image in a way (which relates to my dream). The subject is from part of a nightmare that I had when I was a kid. It is "falsely represented" because the window was not part of my dream, and of course the background wasn't either. Also the snakes were coming up from holes in the floor which they aren't here, but you get the general idea. There are 12 prints in this edition.

Mark Bradford.

Mark Bradford's use of layering in his collages and other artworks is very intriguing. I bet each piece takes months to finish. I was first introduced to Bradford at the Modern in Fort Worth, and was drawn to it by its size (it covered the whole wall it was on). He doesn't have a website, but you can find out more about him through PBS' Art:21.

Conceptual artist, Mel Chin, agreed to become a visiting artist/professor at the university this semester for a five week course. I was very fortunate to get into the class (so many complications) and experience his genius. I cannot stress how thankful I am that he agreed to come here. He made us think about so many things, and the world around us. Mel is one scarily smart, funny guy whom I miss terribly. Unfortunately our class was canceled for a week due to an ice storm, but we were all productive through the mess. At the end of our class we had an exhibition at the Walton Arts Center. Mel wanted it to be an equal exhibition between all of us, and not focused solely on him. Since most of us had created work during the storm we decided that that was what we would exhibit, and aptly named the exhibit Shelter From the Storm. The above photo was our concept wall displaying all of our drawings and ideas cultivated throughout the class.

Extraction of Plenty from What Remains: 1823 -

Two columns which are exact replicas from the White House squeeze an empty cornucopia made of mud, banana, mahogany, coffee, and goats' blood. Mel relates back to the history of the cornucopia, and refers to the fractured ability of Latin American countries to prosper on their own because of America's foreign policy. The "cracks" at the top of the columns are the signatures that are on the foreign policy.

After hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Mel struggled with what he could do to help. He eventually decided that there was nothing he could do, and decided to look elsewhere. His research led him to discover that there was a harmful amount of lead in New Orleans' soil before the hurricane. Determined to save the city from the horrible health problems (ADHS along with violence) that the lead was creating he founded Operation Paydirt. Through Operation Paydirt children (and other citizens) draw on Fundred dollar bills that are going to be exchanged for the money and jobs needed to fix the soil. He created Safehouse to be reminiscent of a bank safe. It is the headquarters of Operation Paydirt and contains a display wall of some fundreds collected so far. My friend, Anna, creates these mysterious and magnificent oil paintings. She is interested in perspective, and paints these straight from her memory of her current apartment. Anna imagines the rooms empty and the walls invisible. Her color palette explores the various temperatures of whites (with browns), and the feelings they can create. I hope that is she able to part with one of them someday!

Technically, yes. I have become sort of a hermit crab lately; sticking to the comfort of my bed, and wasting endless hours on a senseless computer game (and the internets). I need to calm that part of my life down again because I've become sort of useless.

School is back on the scene after our break from the ice storm adventure (four days of no classes, and only two days with no electricity). I'm finally popping out some prints in Etching II (photos will come soon), so now I feel somewhat satisfied in that class. I am finally focusing on a concept this semester, which I've never done before (because it wasn't stressed). My prints are going to surround the drama that is my step-family, and dealing with my parents divorce (which is about time since that was over 17 years ago). I have so much anger and stress built up inside that I need a way to get it out. My mom is bringing her wedding album and yearbook this weekend when she visits, so hopefully I can get some more ideas from those. My roommate and I have been cleaning in preparation for her visit (ha).

I finally ordered the quilt I had been eying at CB2 when I discovered it was on sale (around 50% off!). Suzanne and I went to my favorite flea market and furniture store a couple of weeks ago, and I found a beautiful Danish Modern dresser that is begging for me to take it home. I need more drawer space, and for $97 I might be willing to go for it.

Chicago is just (about) a month away, eek!

While browsing through the modern art collection in the fine arts library a few months ago I picked up a book that had an interesting cover. The artwork in the book fascinated me and captured my attention instantly. Tim Hawkinson's pieces are wonderful and delightfuly strange, and sometimes downright gross. He made a baby chick skeleton completely out of fingernail clippings. I love being intrigued by a work and being surprised by the materials used to produce it (i.e. Warhol's Oxidation Paintings). Tim Hawkinson does just that.

These are another set in my vintage sheet collection. Why is it so hard to find colorful sheets like these today at an affordable price? I've looked everywhere, maybe I'm not looking in the right places. I should've known that this was going to happen when I tried to put clean sheets on my bed this afternoon...

The ice started yesterday late in the evening, and it hasn't stopped raining/sleeting since. The university closed today, thank goodness. I'm crossing my fingers that it will be closed again tomorrow. A lot of my friends are without power, so we're sort of housing them at the moment. I just hope that we don't end up without it; my roommate's boyfriend lost power several minutes ago and he's in our complex.

Second week of school is almost over, and I still haven't accomplished much. I was sick for the first week, and had to go to the campus health center (bleh). They didn't tell me much or prescribe me anything useful. I got over it just fine with some good ol' Equate cold and sinus (ha). Of course I didn't expect much from them, but it was helpful. While waiting for the doctor to come in my room I couldn't help but notice that whoever built that place forgot to run a bead of silicone or caulk between the countertop and the backsplash. I kept staring at that empty crack wishing I had my own caulk gun to fill it in and fix it. Leave it to This Old House and my dad for me to notice that while I'm sick at the doctor.

One of the rare times that I am forced to physically touch/interact with a total stranger is when I'm on the bus to campus. Everyone gets on the bus with the hopefulness that everyone has taken a shower and worn deodorant that day.

Lucy is back with full force since her surgery last Monday (it was time for some fixin'). It's still sad to see the stitches on her little shaved tummy.

during my winter break (with the exception of work) i have been aimlessly wandering around the internets discovering wonderful new artists and blogs. looking at my new favorite blogs everyday has made me even more restless for a house of my own to design/decorate as i please. my sister asked me why can't i do it now? because i have a roommate and our styles somewhat differ, and there's also the big issue of affording it right now. i know i could do small things, and i have. my room is as i would like it, but i would like some different bedding. i have been searching to no avail for an affordable white quilt with some interesting stitchwork. that's not too dificult to ask for is it? well, apparently it is.

design*sponge has kept me going through the uneventful moments of my break. they cover a variety of different topics from recipes to diy and new artists that they find. i just love anna's house at door sixteen; it has the style of what i imagine for my future house or apartment. she also has some great ideas, like wrapping her christmas presents this year with her old stendig calendar (love, love, love!).

i am in love with chris silas neal's illustrations, and they're priced nicely too. you can find them here, and as soon as my paycheck goes through i might try to fit one in my budget.

i finally ordered some coat hooks to solve our lack of coat hooks problem (we have been throwing our things on the stair railing, not attractive). i bought these from target online. they're quite simple, but very interesting. i can't wait for them to get here!

i've been trying to process this article that i read earlier today. with the reading of that article and the browsing of adbusters (which i do occasionaly) it made me realize that most of the time i have no clue about what is going on in the world (this article isn't exactly relevant). so i guess to make my first resolution for 2k9 it will be to become more informed about more important things, and not just art & design. :]

a friend and i were talking last night about thinking. how much we think (just about different things), and can we ever shut our brains off. i probably think the most when i am trying to fall asleep. my brain wanders aimlessly about random non-sense, but sometimes they are important things. one of the things that i realized the other night while letting my brain go is that we don't just have first impressions. i believe that we have first, second, and third impressions. the first is when someone else describes that person (or place) to you, and you create them (or it) in your mind. your imagination builds your first impression. then when you actually meet that person (or go to that place) you have the second impression. you only know the exterior, and the small things that are allowed to be given to you at the first meeting. then slowly that second impression sort of fades away, and is replaced with the final impression (which i don't think can really be considered an "impression" anymore). usually that final stage is somewhat different from the second impression as you get to know that person (or place). i love dreaming of what a person will be like when i meet them, and especially places. i can still remember how i pictured my dad's first house (when my parents divorced), and having my picture completely altered when i finally visited.

i feel like i can't breathe enough. everything is overwhelming me. color studies critique went ok i guess. no one really said anything about my work except for jackie (the teacher). she seemed to enjoy it, and that's all that really counts. i guess. my lamp critique is about to begin, and i am nervous. i am happy with the base, but the shade is horrible. after this is over i need to reconstruct a new frame for it. all the chaos will be over soon, and then i can breathe. maybe.

two of my friends are going through some serious health issues right now, and i can't hide that i am worried.

twelve editions of two, five colors, and eleven (+ or -) hours later i am 5/6 of the way done with my color studies final. i just have to construct the book that they will go in. after that i will assemble my lamp, and i can't wait to see the finished product.

it took two and a half hours today to print the monster. by monster i mean my lamp that i am making for my final in computers in art. we were given the choice of making a large poster or creating a 3d object (basically geometric shapes and such). i wanted to make something that i could get a lot of use out of, and that i would not have to buy. i decided on a floor lamp (made all out of paper and lamp parts). as i am imagining what assembly will be like, i believe i am going to have to add some sort of skeleton to the base to give it some sustainability. i hope that everything works out, and there are not too many problems. what i thought was a simple, cheap project has become a $72+ project so far. after it is completed it will probably be about $100, so let's hope this sucker lasts a heck of a long time.

a trip to dallas is planned for sometime soon. we will be visiting king tut, and some awesome art museums (of course!). i can't wait because i've never been, but i am a little nervous about some aspects of the trip. then branson sometime over break to go to the titanic exhibit. i am super pumped about that because i've always had this fascination with the ship. lastly it'll be to chicago after spring break for the printmaking convention!

reading, traveling, developing photos, screen printing (hopefully), and building a coat rack is what i'll be doing over break. i plan to design the coat rack after this. the reading list: (finishing) a heartbreaking work of staggering genius, my one-night stand with cancer, letters to a young artist, and whatever finds its way into my hands.

i am so lucky to have found such awesome friends. it seems like it was yesterday i was in my freshman/sophomore year, depressed, thinking i would never have my own little group of friends like everyone else. i'm glad it took a while because now i know that good things really do take time. if you just hold out, things will happen. i am so glad i came here on my own, and with no friends in tow. i have been able to discover who i am along the way (and still am) by myself. i think that if i had went to williams with dixie, it would have been a very slow process. i love her to death, but i relied on her too much in high school. i am so blessed to have such amazing people in my life. i'd take coffee & scrabble, art mags, doing nothing but still doing something, and dinner over big, drunken parties any day. i don't see how people can call it a friendship if that's all they do together.

i can't believe there's only about three weeks or so left in this semester. there's so much i need to do before the end.

We're working on lidded jars in class now, next is teapots (oh dear). I hope Mandi only makes us do six because teapots have several steps. Eek. I've begun actually stitching into my pots now all thanks to a suggestion from my teacher. I had a few cups where I had created a stitching pattern with some glaze, and I liked how it looked. Leave it up to our ceramics teachers to turn everything literal (you fake something, and they suggest that you actually do it). They're just tests right now to see how things will turn out, and also to figure which glazes I'm going to use. I think the stitching will be my main detail for my final pieces. I love the way stitching looks, the whole handmade quality and the way it's sort of creepy (but that's probably just me). I guess I sort of view it as creepy is because I think of Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, and also wounds. But then another part makes me feel warm because it reminds me of my grandmother who was always sewing.

I am absolutely in the love with the weather right now. It's almost the right temperature for a nice, warm fire. If only we had a fireplace... My hot cinnamon sunset tea will just have to make do (and of course the heater).

Our electric bill this month is only $31.62! That's also another reason why I'm in love with the weather. :]

I get to teach my first art lesson this coming Tuesday to a group of fifth graders. I was all excited about my lesson/nervous until I found out part of it's not going to work. My lesson was on Andy Warhol (of course), and I was going to have them sort of re-create his picture of Marilyn Monroe. I was going to take a picture of each student, have them draw the details of their face (lips, eyes, etc.) onto a transparency sheet, and then paint blocks of color on the actual picture. The finished product would have the detailed transparency placed over their painted picture to simulate the Monroe piece since it's not easy to do the whole screen printing deal. I found out today that I have to have their parents' permission to take their picture, something that will not happen in the alloted amount of time. I didn't even think about that nor did my teacher (obviously or I would have changed it already). It saddens me that there has to be so many restrictions and protection on students these days. If only I had been born in the '70s or earlier...

i haven't created a to-do list yet, but i bet it's going to be a doozey. laundry is pretty much top priority because i haven't done it in a month. yes, a MONTH. apparently i do have a lot of clothes, but my closet begs to differ. i've never let it get this bad.

matt finally texted me today, but only to say that he misses me. no other info, so i guess i'm still going to have to make that trip to his house to find out what's going on...

i think i'm finally getting the hang of throwing with porcelain, and i am excited.

apparently my "gaydar" doesn't work very well...

i'm really worried about my friend, matt. no one has heard from or seen him in a little over two weeks. he told us he was having some health issues (just some stomach problems), and that he might have to have surgery. we've all tried to contact him, and he hasn't returned any of our efforts which isn't like him. i'm sure we would've all known by now if something really bad had happened, but i'm still concerned. i got his address from a friend and plan on going by sometime soon if that's what it takes...

i guess i should explain my blog title. interventions and lullabies is the name of my favorite album from my all-time favorite band, the format. i thought it was an appropriate title for a blog because i think we all need a few interventions and lullabies in our lives. i know i do.

i've slept late twice lately, and i haven't done that since i first moved in in august. sleeping late has made me lazy and tired, i hate it. at least it's friday because i don't have class or work to worry about. i've got so much work to do, but i guess it's not as much as it could be. we have 10 plates due in ceramics thursday, and i only have one started. i need to stop procrastinating; it seems to have been worse lately.

the colder weather has been really nice lately. we've shut off the ac, and opened the windows. it gets me excited because i know our bill will be less. that's pretty pathetic.

i can't stand martha stewart.

i have never been a fan of confrontation nor has my sister. we had thought all along that we got it from our mother, but we realized that we actually acquired it from our dad. one of the very few pros with being non-confrontational (...?) is that i get over things very quickly. just give me a couple of hours, and i'll be completely over it. tonight was the first night my new roommate and i had some problems. it all started with a little puppy named lucy. i love them both, but things got crazy today. chewed up carpet + knocked over lamp + long day at work/ceramics all led to frustration. i got over my whole confrontation deal, and thankfully we talked things over. i feel a butt ton better than i would have if i had just went to bed. so at the end of a very long day i am extremely thankful to have an awesome roommie, and an a okay little pup. :]

stress is going to get the better of me if i don't get things in control. work and studios (and laundry) has made my brain frantic. tomorrow is a new beginning...
